A biogeochemical comparison of sea loch sediments. Manganese and iron contents, sulphate reduction and oxygen uptake rates ArchiMer

The sediments of the upper basins of Lochs Goil, Fyne and Etive were high in both solid phase extractable manganese (up to 3.7% w/w), and high in pore water manganese (up to 600 mu M), while Loch Linnhe sediments were low in manganese. Solid phase manganese from the surface sediments at the deepest stations was highest in those lochs where the mean residence time of the bottom water is longest, indicating the importance of manganese cycling through the water column. Porewater iron concentrations in the top 2 cm of sediment were highest near the heads of the lochs, i.e. near the main freshwater inputs. Homeostasis is the capacity of living organisms to keep internal conditions regulated at a constant level, despite environmental fluctuations. Integral feedback control is known to play a key role in this behaviour. Here, I show that a feedback system involving transcriptional and post-translational regulations of the same executor protein acts as a proportional integral (PI) controller, leading to enhanced transient performances in comparison with a classical integral loop. A biophysical model of S. aurita early life history in the northern Gulf of Guinea ArchiMer

S. aurita is the most abundant small pelagic fish in the northern Gulf of Guinea. Its reproduction and recruitment depend crucially on environmental conditions. We developed a biophysical model of S. aurita early life history by coupling offline an individual-based model with the regional oceanic modeling system (ROMS). We used this model to investigate the main factors driving variability in eggs and larval dispersal and survival in the northern Gulf of Guinea. A Biosensor for Detection of DNA Sequences Based on a 50MHz QCM electronic oscillator circuit ArchiMer

This work deals with the development of a high sensibility DNA biosensor based on a 50MHz Quartz Crystal Microbalance (QCM) Oscillator Electronic Circuit. The designed QCM oscillator sensor is able to detect the presence of complementary DNAs in a solution that match the sequence on a given strand in function of the changes in the output frequency of the oscillator. The design is adapted so that the Barkhausen condition is satisfied even when the quartz is immerged in liquid media. Also a comparative study of the developed 50MHz biosensor in front of a QCM oscillator with smaller frequency is carried out, with object of checking if the sensibility of the oscillator increases, allowing to detect smaller concentrations of the complementary DNA.

The ocean plays a crucial role in the functioning of the Earth System and in the provision of vital goods and services. The United Nations (UN) declared 2021–2030 as the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development. The Roadmap for the Ocean Decade aims to achieve six critical societal outcomes (SOs) by 2030, through the pursuit of four objectives (Os). Statistical models of marine ecosystems use a variety of data sources to estimate parameters using composite or weighted likelihood functions with associated weighting issues and questions on how to obtain variance estimates. Regardless of the method used to obtain point estimates, a method is required for variance estimation. A bootstrap technique is introduced for the evaluation of uncertainty in such models, taking into account inherent spatial and temporal correlations in the datasets, which are commonly transferred as assumptions from a likelihood estimation procedure into Hessian-based variance estimation procedures. A brief review of nutritional studies for Penaeus monodon ArchiMer

In order to develop effective formulated for Penaeus monodon , sufficient information is needed on its nutritional requirements. Unfortunately, research on this area has been very limited. This paper outlines the results of such research. Since data on the nutritional requirements of P. japonicus are relatively well established, some of these data are also reviewed in this paper and are used as a basis for assessing the nutritional requirements of P. monodon . Protein, lipid, carbohydrate, mineral and vitamin requirements are evaluated from the parameters of growth survival and feed efficiency. Studies on the effects of enzymes and the development of microparticulate diet for larvae are also summarized.

Primary production by phytoplankton represents a major pathway whereby atmospheric CO2 is sequestered in the ocean, but this requires iron, which is in scarce supply. As over 99% of iron is complexed to organic ligands, which increase iron solubility and microbial availability, understanding the processes governing ligand dynamics is of fundamental importance. Ligands within humic-like substances have long been considered important for iron complexation, but their role has never been explained in an oceanographically consistent manner. A Case Report of a Botulism Outbreak in Beef Cattle Due to the Contamination of Wheat by a Roaming Cat Carcass: From the Suspicion to the Management of the Outbreak ArchiMer

We report a botulism outbreak in Charolais cattle fed with wheat flour contaminated by Clostridium botulinum type C and the management of the outbreak at each step from the clinical suspicion to the cleaning and disinfection operations. Diagnosis was based on typical suggestive clinical signs and detection of C. botulinum type C using real-time PCR in samples collected from three young affected bulls. All young exposed bulls and cows (18 animals) eventually died, but three young bulls and one cow were recovering when it was decided to euthanize them. C. botulinum type C was detected in the liver of these four animals. A C-Band Geophysical Model Function for Determining Coastal Wind Speed Using Synthetic Aperture Radar ArchiMer

A new geophysical model function (GMF), called C_SARMOD2, has been developed to relate high-resolution C-band normalized radar cross section (NRCS), acquired in VV polarization over the ocean, to the 10-m height wind speed. A total of 3078 RADARSAT-2 and Sentinel-1A VV-polarized synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images, acquired under different wind speed conditions, were collocated with in situ buoy measurements. The paired dataset was used to derive transfer functions and coefficients of C_SARMOD2, and then to validate the wind speed retrievals. A census of Meddies in a long-term high-resolution simulation ArchiMer

The output from a high-resolution two-decade long Mediterranean Outflow simulation is analysed here to provide a census of Mediterranean Water eddies (aka Meddies), both anticyclones and cyclones. The formation rate of Meddies that survive for at least 90 days is of 12 Meddies yr(-1) of which similar to 12% are cyclones. The rate of formation reaches 40 Meddies yr(-1) (30% cyclones) when considering all the Meddies living over 15 days. About 70% of the population is born along the southwestern Iberian slope, but several robust Meddles also originate in points of convergence of the main pathways into the open ocean. In this poster I will present the results from text mining analyses of the abstracts of the current and previous ICES acoustic symposia as well as WGFAST working group reports. By creating and comparing lists of the most common words in each symposium and WGFAST reports it will be possible to measure the overall change in breadth and possible shifts in focus in the field of marine ecosystem acoustics. The same analysis will also identify the contribution of WGFAST to the progress in the field. An analysis of the authors will provide means to characterize the structure of the research fellow communities participating in ICES acoustic symposia and WGFAST meetings.

A classification scheme for deep seafloor habitats ArchiMer

A standard, universally useful classification scheme for deepwater habitats needs to be established so that descriptions of these habitats can be accurately and efficiently applied among scientific disciplines. In recent years many marine benthic habitats in deep water have been described using geophysical and biological data. These descriptions can vary from one investigator to another, which makes it difficult to compare habitats and associated biological assemblages among geographic regions. Using geophysical data collected with a variety of remote sensor systems and in situ biological and geologic observations, we have constructed a classification scheme that can be used in describing marine benthic habitats in deep water.
